Why traditional isn’t always enough

At The Knox School, being untraditional isn’t about being different for the sake of it. It’s about being intentional.

The Cube
In Year 9, students participate in The Cube, a transformative learning experience that exemplifies The Knox School’s commitment to student-led, authentic education. More than an elective program, The Cube is designed to foster agency and develop the capabilities young people need to thrive in a complex and rapidly changing world.
The Cube combines project-based learning, design thinking and experiential education through a range of transdisciplinary electives. Each semester, students choose a pathway that aligns with their interests, empowering them to take ownership of their learning while developing essential skills in communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.
What makes The Cube particularly powerful is its connection to real-world challenges. Students work alongside authentic clients and community partners to design products, services and solutions that create meaningful impact beyond the classroom. Projects such as Behind Those Eyes, where students capture the stories of aged-care residents through photography and biography writing, and Live Streaming, where students use professional recording equipment to document the sounds of healthy natural waterways, demonstrate how learning becomes more purposeful when connected to people, places and communities.
Reflection and personal growth are embedded throughout the experience. Through the GRObric, a self-assessment framework, students track their development across key capabilities, while also earning Melbourne Metrics credentials through the University of Melbourne. These opportunities encourage students to recognise their strengths, embrace challenges and develop a deeper understanding of themselves as learners.
The Cube is ultimately about more than academic achievement. It cultivates empathy, innovation and a strong sense of responsibility, empowering students to become creators of positive change and equipping them with the confidence and capability to navigate and shape the future.
Knoxpeditions
Learning continues to extend beyond the classroom through our experiential learning program, Knoxpeditions. Firmly grounded in curriculum, service, project-based learning and design thinking, Knoxpeditions connect classroom learning with real-world experience in meaningful and purposeful ways.
Working alongside community partners and industry professionals, students collaborate to design high-quality products, initiatives and solutions that make a genuine difference. These experiences challenge students to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their learning beyond traditional academic settings.
Recent projects have included the Year 6 Indigenous Garden Project, where students reimagined a shared space that honours Country while exploring sustainability, innovation and design. Through experiences like these, students see firsthand how their knowledge, creativity and actions can contribute to positive change.
Knoxpeditions embody our belief that education is most powerful when learning is connected to life. By engaging with authentic challenges and real-world opportunities, students develop character, build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of how they can make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
As students move into Year 10, the Constellations Series reimagines the traditional camp experience through three distinct pathways: Cambodia, Singapore and Melbourne. Rather than focusing solely on adventure or travel, each journey combines academic learning with service, cultural understanding and real-world problem-solving, creating opportunities for students to engage deeply with the world around them.
Aligned with the Knoxpeditions framework, students work alongside community clients and partners to contribute to meaningful projects while developing a range of transferable skills. These experiences encourage students to broaden their perspectives, build empathy, navigate unfamiliar environments and apply their learning in authentic contexts.
The Constellations Series challenges students to think beyond their immediate surroundings, engage with diverse communities and consider their role in creating positive change. Along the way, students earn credentials that recognise the skills and capabilities they have developed, reinforcing the value of learning that is purposeful, experiential and connected to the real world.
More than a camp, the Constellations Series is a transformative experience that inspires curiosity, deepens understanding and helps students develop the confidence and perspective needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
These experiences are complemented by our Futures Hub, where students actively explore pathways, industries and emerging opportunities. Rather than waiting until the final years of schooling to consider life beyond graduation, students are supported to think intentionally about their strengths, interests and aspirations, helping them approach the future with clarity, purpose and confidence.
Together, these programs reflect our belief that education should not simply prepare students for exams, it should prepare them for life.
Preparing students for a complex world
The future doesn’t reward those who can simply follow instructions; it rewards those who can think independently, adapt quickly and approach challenges with curiosity.
